Past & Present

Since its establishment, the Graduate School of Education (GSE) has played a pivotal role in shaping teacher education and graduate studies in Türkiye. Below is a timeline of key milestones that highlight the School’s ongoing growth, innovation, and contributions to the field.

Historical Milestones

1988
Bilkent University launched its first in-service teacher education program at the graduate level for practising teachers in higher education. The program, MA in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), was developed in collaboration with the Fulbright Commission in Ankara.

2000
The Graduate School of Education (GSE) was founded.
It launched a pre-service teacher education program, MA in Teacher Education (TE), initially in four areas: Biology, English, History, and Turkish Language & Literature. Mathematics was added the following year.

2003
GSE introduced a five-year combined BA & MA program,
English Teacher Education (ETE).

In the same year, in collaboration with the School of English Language,
GSE launched the MA program in Management in Education (EM)
designed for practising English language teachers.

2004
GSE launched another five-year combined BA & MA program, Computer and Instructional Technology Teacher Education (CTE).

2007
GSE initiated the
MA in Curriculum & Instruction (CI), a program for practising teachers.

2010
Due to national teacher education policy changes, the previous MA in Teacher Education (TE) was replaced by the new program MA in Curriculum & Instruction with Teaching Certificate (CITE).
This program has since been offered in five areas:
Biology, English, Mathematics, Physics, and Turkish Language & Literature.

2011
GSE established its first doctoral program:
PhD in Curriculum & Instruction.

GSE launched a new full-time MA program for qualified teachers, MA in Curriculum & Instruction with Teaching Certificate (CI-IB).
