Welcome to the GSE

The Graduate School of Education is dedicated to producing well qualified high school teachers in its pre-service Master’s program. Since the Graduate School of Education opened in 2000 we have graduated over three hundred teachers. Many have since gone on to take their place as leaders in schools, and are already making a contribution to the development of education in Turkey.

It is clear that our teacher education program, working with our expanding partnerships with schools, both locally and nationally, prepares highly qualified teachers with the potential for leadership in Turkish education. Our partnerships are re-forged each year in the annual international conference run by the Graduate School, attended by the administrators of some thirty leading schools in Turkey.

Within the overall mission of Bilkent University, the Graduate School of Education will:

 - prepare highly qualified teachers with potential for leadership in Turkish education

- develop productive relationships with its partner schools

- provide opportunities for practising teachers to upgrade their knowledge and qualifications.

To achieve this mission, the Graduate School of Education will work with its partner schools,

other faculties of Bilkent University, the Ministry of National Education, and selected international partners.

A major strength of our program is the variety of schools which our trainee-teachers experience, together with the number of days they spend working with teachers and school students, as they learn their teaching skills.  They teach in schools in Ankara and other major cities in Turkey, as well as in another country.  For the first nine years of the program, our trainee-teachers spent six weeks teaching in an American high school, during a two-month stay in the US, generously supported by the US Department of State. Since 2011, the overseas experience has been in England where students spend three weeks at the University of Cambridge in the Postgraduate Certificate in Education program, followed by two weeks in one of five prestigious schools.

Since 2011, students who successfully complete their two-year program at the Graduate School of Education also gain an International Baccalaureate Teacher Award.

For practising teachers, the School of Education has three other master’s programs, and one PhD program. They are all aimed at professional practitioners in education, including school teachers, who wish to continue their education while still working as educators.

Of these, the oldest is the MA in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), which works with English teachers from other universities in an intensive program.

In 2003, we opened a masters program in Management in Education for teachers and educators looking to develop their management skills and aiming at promotion to management positions.

The MA in Curriculum and Instruction was opened in 2007. It is aimed at practising school teachers who wish to participate in professional development as they work towards a master’s degree, and thus improve their practice and their career prospects.

The PhD program in Curriculum and Instruction was opened in 2011. It is aimed at teachers and other educators who will contribute to the advancement of knowledge and methods of enquiry through independent and original research, allowing them to make an effective and up-to-date contribution to quality education within the education sectors in Turkey.

The School’s graduate programs, summarized above, enable school teachers and others working in education to develop knowledge and skills both to extend their own practice and also assist in the professional development of colleagues.

The Graduate School is proud to contribute to the professional development of teachers from Ankara and elsewhere through these graduate programs.
